Which cars are suitable for mobility scooter hoist?

Car hoists for mobility scooters are not suitable for all makes and model of car so it is important that you check the compatibility of your car for a hoist.

Often a model of car can seem to be a large vehicle, but the shape or dimensions of the boot opening make it unsuitable for some, or all car hoists to be installed. The car boot opening being high from the ground, the sloping shape of the tailgate, and the internal features can all prevent a car hoist from being suitable.

Once you know your car is suitable for a mobility scooter hoist, it is important to check the combination of car and hoist available will work with your mobility scooter. The height, length, width and weight of the mobility scooter can all determine if it is compatible with the hoist. It may be that you can fold, adjust or remove parts from your mobility scooter to reduce the size to allow it to be loaded into a specific vehicle. You may also be able to fold down rear seats in the vehicle to create a larger boot area to accommodate the mobility scooter.

Jeff Gosling manufacture the Apex Assist Boot Hoist which is a 4-way powered car hoist which can load up to 150kg (depending on the vehicle). This style of hoist is the most commonly chosen as it operates up/down and in/out and can take the weight of many of the mobility scooters available. If your car is not suitable for this style of hoist, it may be that a smaller car hoist which requires more manual operation and can take a smaller load will be possible in your preferred car.
