What are the potential outcomes if I go for a driving assessment?

We can get asked this quite often as sometimes people are concerned about having an assessment in case they are told they can no longer drive. The main thing to remember is that the assessments take place to aim to assist you with continuing to drive and you will only be advised that you can longer drive if there is a safety concern for yourself and other road users.

There are generally three main outcomes at the end of a driving assessment:

1. The driver is classified as 'safe' and they can continue to drive as they have been.

2. The driver is classified as 'unsafe' and so the DVLA will be notified. The likely outcome of this is that their driving licence will be revoked.

3. The driver is classed as requiring some 're-training' where a few issues may have been noticed but it is believed these can be worked on with some further lessons or training.

The re-training category would also be used if the driver can continue to drive but requires adaptations which they have not previously used.
