What adaptations can I make to my car?

There are many different adaptations to assist with driving or access to a car, or to enable a wheelchair or mobility scooter to be loaded.

Driving adaptations include devices such as hand controls to operate the brake and accelerator pedals or steering aids to help with one-handed steering or reduced strength.

Access adaptations include products such as transfer plates which assist in transferring into the front seats of a car or grab handles which help with stability.

Stowage adaptations assist with loading a mobility scooter or wheelchair into the boot of a car and include products such as boot hoists.

There are other ancillary adaptations, such as a boot strap to help close a tailgate that is too high to reach.

The adaptations you require will be dependent on what you need assistance with. Some adaptations will always be required, such as if you need assistance operating the pedals. Other adaptations might only be needed on certain cars, for example if you need assistance closing the boot, some cars will come with an electric tailgate from the factory whereas others won’t and so you’ll require an additional adaptation.
