Left Foot Accelerators

Left Foot Accelerator - Twin Folding

The most popular left foot accelerator in the UK. Our market-leading twin folding left foot accelerator is designed for drivers who are unable to operate the accelerator pedal with their right foot. This adaptation allows a driver to operate an accelerator pedal on the left of the brake pedal with their left foot.

Our precision design process means that every left foot accelerator design adopts the same properties as the OEM right side pedal. During the design process, the left-hand side pedal is designed to replicate the right-hand pedal as closely as possible in proximity to the brake pedal and pedal height. This results in the driving experience replicating the standard driving experience.

Operation

The twin folding left foot accelerator mechanically replicates the standard right hand side accelerator pedal with an additional pedal to the left hand side of the brake pedal. You simply pull down the required pedal and the opposite pedal will fold up out of the way. This allows the vehicle to be converted easily to drive with either the left or right foot depending on the drivers preference.

The adaptation mimics the original pedal with full range of acceleration and no loss of 'Kick Down'.

The safety function only allows for use of one accelerator pedal at a time.

Left Foot Accelerator - Twin Flip - operation

The twin folding left foot accelerator is suitable for automatic vehicles with a pedal which hangs down from the bulkhead. For vehicles with a fully electric floor mounted pedal, please refer to our electric left foot accelerator section.

Important Safety Notice

Risks of Driving with a Left Foot Accelerator

Attention: Drivers transitioning from conventional vehicles, particularly those accustomed to operating a clutch pedal with their left foot.

Operating a vehicle with a left foot accelerator poses significant risks, especially for those new to this configuration. Transitioning from a conventional right foot accelerator or from a manual vehicle with a clutch pedal can be challenging and dangerous.

Key risks include:

Confusion Between Pedals

Your left foot may instinctively try to press the clutch pedal, leading to unintentional acceleration or braking, increasing the risk of accidents.

Delayed Reaction Times

Adapting to a new pedal layout can cause delayed response times in critical situations, compromising safety.

Different Pedal Sensitivity

The finesse required for accelerating with a left foot accelerator differs significantly from the operation of a clutch pedal. This can lead to jerky or unpredictable acceleration if the driver is not thoroughly accustomed to the new system.

Safety Concerns

There is an inherent learning curve associated with adapting to a left foot accelerator. During this period, the likelihood of unintentional acceleration or deceleration is higher, which can be dangerous on busy roads or in traffic.

Precautionary Measures:

Professional Training

Seek professional training to get accustomed to the new pedal configuration. Consider sessions with a driving instructor specialised in adaptive controls.

Practice in Controlled Environments

Begin practicing in safe, controlled environments until fully comfortable. During this practice undertake emergency braking and other critical manoeuvres to ensure competent operation is achieved. Please do not attempt to drive the vehicle away from the dealership or busy place immediately after handover if it’s your first time using a left foot accelerator.

Installation & Maintenance

Ensure that installation and any maintenance is carried out only by an adaptation installer who has undertaken our training programme and has an up-to-date installation certificate.

Regular Review

Periodically reassess your proficiency and comfort with the left foot accelerator to maintain safety standards.

Some vehicles have a foot operated pedal to release the parking brake instead of a handbrake lever. When a left foot accelerator is installed, most vehicles with a foot operated parking brake may also require an additional adaptation. This is due to the left foot accelerator pedal being too close to the parking brake pedal and therefore the parking brake must be converted to hand operated. Left Foot Accelerator - Electric

Our market-leading electric left foot accelerator is designed for drivers who are unable to operate the accelerator pedal with their right foot. This adaptation allows a driver to operate an accelerator pedal on the left of the brake pedal with their left foot.

Our precision design process means that every left foot accelerator design adopts the same properties as the OEM right side pedal. We supply and install an identical OEM pedal to the one on the right-hand side of the vehicle so it aesthetically matches. This results in the driving experience with the adaptation replicating the standard driving experience.

Electric Left Foot Accelerator
Electric Left Foot Accelerator

Operation

The electric left foot accelerator electrically replicates the standard right hand side accelerator pedal using an additional OEM accelerator pedal to the left hand side of the brake pedal.

The electric left foot accelerator is operated by simply selecting the required pedal using a change over switch. The pedal selected is energised whilst the other pedal has no function and can be used as a foot rest. This allows the vehicle to be converted easily to drive with either the left or right foot depending on the drivers requirements.

The switch will be mounted in an accessible location but where it cannot be accidentally knocked. If you have a preference of where you would like the switch mounting, please discuss this with your installer before the work is carried out to see what is possible.

Electric Left Foot Accelerator - operation

The electric left foot accelerator is suitable for automatic vehicles with a fully electric floor mounted accelerator pedal. For vehicles with a conventional accelerator pedal which hangs down from the bulkhead, please refer to our twin folding left foot accelerator section.

Left Foot Accelerators FAQs

Q: Can a left foot accelerator be fitted on any vehicle or is my choice limited?

A: Jeff Gosling left foot accelerators can be fitted to most vehicles, where we consider there is enough room to the left of the brake pedal to do so safely. The style of left foot accelerator available will depend on the type of pedal with the vehicle.

Q: Will the fitting of the left foot accelerator cause any damage to my vehicle?

A: Safety is our primary concern when we design adaptations, however we pay great attention to the integrity of the vehicle. We may need to remove the footrest to make room for the accelerator pedal on the left hand side. It is not always possible for this to be replaced. For twin folding left foot accelerators, a new accelerator will be required to reinstate the vehicle when the adaptation is removed. If you have your vehicle on the Motability scheme, you will hand it back with the adaptation still installed and therefore do not need to get the vehicle re-instated.

Q: Can someone else drive the vehicle when the left foot accelerator is fitted?

A: Due to the design of the left foot accelerator, the vehicle can be driven with a conventional automatic setup. It is important that any drivers are notified of the adaptation so they are aware of it and how it operates.

Q: How can I be sure that my right foot will not interfere with the vehicle’s standard accelerator pedal on the right side.

A: With a twin folding left foot accelerator, the accelerator folds up out of the way creating space for you to place your right foot comfortably. With an electric left foot accelerator, the pedal which is not in use is deactivated and therefore even when depressed it will not cause the vehicle to accelerate.

Q: My car has a foot operated parking brake on the left hand side of the driver’s footwell. Can I still have a left foot accelerator fitted?

A: Yes, but when a vehicle has a foot operated parking brake we often have to convert it to hand operated to allow space for the left accelerator pedal. This is an additional adaptation which will be added to the order when it is required for a specific model of vehicle. If you would like to check if your vehicle requires this adaptation, please contact us or your installer directly.
"Usual high standard I have come to expect over a 22 year period of having adaptations supplied by Jeff Gosling Hand Controls Ltd. A great company. 10/10.”
